A BMW X5 with the consumption of a small car. Optimum traction and agility thanks to the BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system and dynamic driving characteristics in all driving modes. With its versatility and dynamics, the BMW X5 xDrive40e meets all expectations. The eDrive lettering at the rear is a subtle optical difference to the BMW X5. What really sets it apart is the range in the purely electric mode. It can drive approximately 30 kilometres locally emission-free and with zero fuel consumption. The high-voltage battery is stored safely beneath the luggage compartment floor, which, with a generous volume of 1,720 litres, is ideal for bulky luggage items. INDIVIDUAL DRIVING CHARACTERISTICS.

As a plug-in hybrid, the BMW X5 xDrive40e has various different drive modes that allow the driver to significantly influence the actual energy consumption. This depends on both the driving mode selected and the driver’s personal behaviour. When the battery is fully charged, you can drive for approximately 30 kilometres without using a single drop of fuel. In the AUTO eDrive mode, the optimal combination of electric motor and combustion engine enables the focus to be placed on top-quality efficiency.

  • Urban driving

    When driving in the city, the BMW X5 xDrive40e exploits the strengths of the plug-in hybrid to the full. Short distances can be covered in the fully electric mode, and driving in the hybrid mode enables combined fuel consumption of 3.4 to 3.3 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions of 78 to 77 g/km. In view of this, the BMW X5 xDrive40e in the city can deservedly be called a “genuine three-litre car”.

  • Day-to-day driving

    The BMW X5 xDrive40e is the ideal car for commuters too. Using an average of 6.5 to 6.0 litres for a journey of 50 to 60 kilometres, its fuel consumption is markedly lower than of other cars in this vehicle class.   • Long-distance driving

    Enjoy low-consumption driving fun – even for long distances. The combined overall range of the BMW X5 xDrive40e is 830 kilometres, which means average fuel consumption of 11.0 to 10.5 litres for an extended journey.

DRIVETRAIN.

A high-output BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder petrol engine and a high-efficiency eDrive electric motor are the driving forces of the BMW X5 xDrive40e. The intelligent BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system guarantees optimum traction. The combination of these EfficientDynamics technologies produced an innovative vehicle offering not only low fuel consumption, but also awesome driving dynamics and stability in all driving conditions.

INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.

Whether for the daily drive to work or for weekend excursions: Short trips of up to approximately 30 kilometres can be completed in the purely electric mode, which means emission- and fuel-free. For longer distances or more demanding routes, the intelligent energy management ensures the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine.
The eDrive button allows the driver to choose between three different electric drive modes: the standard AUTO eDRIVE mode, the purely electric MAX eDRIVE mode and the SAVE BATTERY mode.

  • AUTO eDRIVE mode

    In the AUTO eDRIVE mode, the intelligent BMW EfficientDynamics system determines the most efficient combination of electric motor and combustion engine – depending on the driving speed and the battery charging status. This mode is divided into two phases: If the battery charging status is between 12% and 100%, you can drive at up to 70 km/h – free of local emissions and without using any fuel. At higher speeds or with more demanding requirements, the petrol engine switches on automatically. If the battery charging status drops below 12%, the BMW X5 xDrive40e can be driven in the purely electric mode and with moderate acceleration at speeds of up to 55 km/h.

  • MAX eDRIVE mode

    Electric driving fun to the max: In the MAX eDRIVE mode, you can enjoy purely electric driving at speeds of up to 120 km/h. At higher speeds or when the acceleration potential has been exhausted, the combustion engine switches on automatically.

  • SAVE BATTERY mode

    When the battery charging status is low, the SAVE BATTERY mode enables the battery to be charged by the combustion engine or allows the charging status to be maintained. In this way, the driver can save the battery capacity for purely electric driving later.

  • Predictive selection

    Once the destination has been entered into the navigation system, the predictive energy management analyses the planned route using constant data such as speed limits and real-time information on the current traffic status. In this way, the system uses the purely electric driving mode efficiently, appropriately and, above all, on routes on which it’s most beneficial (e.g. driving in the city).

CHARGING.

Whether at a conventional household power socket or using the BMW i Wallbox from the comprehensive range of 360° ELECTRIC products and services – charging the high-voltage battery couldn’t be easier. You can top up while you’re out and about at one of the many ChargeNow public charging stations.

All-round service for e-mobility.

  • Charging at home

    The vehicle can be conveniently charged at home at a conventional household 230 volt power socket, and has a "full tank" after less than four hours. The car's charging port is located behind a flap on the front left side panel. All that is needed for charging is the specially designed cable, which can be stored safely and compactly under the luggage compartment floor. A special seal protects the charging port and plug from the elements. LED light rings on the charging port make the charging status visually clear.
    Instead of a normal power socket, a BMW i Wallbox can also be mounted as a charging station. It offers increased charging power, significantly shortening charging time. A display in the specifically tailored instrument cluster informs the driver about the high-voltage battery's current level of charge. Depending on various factors, for example the strength of the charge at the power source, devices actively consuming electricity in the car during the charging process and the use of a Wallbox, it takes less than three hours for an empty high-voltage battery to recharge completely. During external charging, the passenger area can be pre-heated or cooled without affecting the charging status of the high-voltage battery.

The standard-feature Adaptive Suspension Package Comfort ensures full driving dynamics, stability at all times and a pleasant driving feeling – even on long journeys and even when the vehicle is carrying a heavy load. Fully variable shock absorbers and self-regulating suspension on the real axle guarantee excellent stability, regardless of the amount of weight on board.
